You wouldn't know it by talking to him, but Johnny Benson still has some recovering to do after seriously injuring himself June 13 in a supermodified race.
"Everything is going pretty good," Benson said after a recent doctor's appointment. "Most everything is in pretty good shape."
Benson was running in the supermodified race at Berlin Speedway in Marne, Mich., when on the second lap, he was involved in a violent, fiery crash which saw the reigning Truck Series champion suffer multiple injuries including broken ribs, burns and a separated shoulder.
Two months later, Benson's spirits are high, although the healing process is ongoing.
"[I'm] pretty much healed except for the shoulder aspect of having surgery three weeks ago," Benson said. "[I] just started therapy and things are moving along fine. All my other stuff is all healed up so I feel pretty good about that."
As one would expect, Benson can't wait to get behind the wheel and compete, but at best, it won't happen until November.
"If I make a race this year it's probably going to be way at the end of the season, if not then the first of next year," Benson said. "With the shoulder and the type of injury I have and the things they had to do to it, to get it at its healthiest -- which [the doctor] feels that it's actually going to be stronger than original -- he said it would be at least three months which puts me right at the end of the season.
"[The doctor] was like, if I absolutely, positively had to run in a race or two, I could do it; just don't get in a wreck."
First, Benson would need to find a ride. Less than a week before his crash, Red Horse Racing informed him the No. 1 Truck team would be shutting down. As of right now, Benson is a free agent and while he admits he hasn't been as aggressive as he needs to be in looking for his next employer, he still is keeping both eyes on 2010.
